Poker Face
Do you ever get that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the closest gambling house, to find a great stakes game of Texas hold’em, to sit at a Chemin de fer table for hours on end. I love that itch. And I love to scratch it.
I also like to watch folks gamble. No two poker faces seem identical. When I bet I like to believe I put on a poker face that is impenetrable. But I know I’ve specific gestures. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I play poker or Black jack. And then I smoke. But I smoke no matter whether I am succeeding or losing, regardless of whether I’ve a great hand or bad.
I once bet inside a weekly poker game. The game was constantly 5 card draw. There was a gentleman who played with us every week who generally wore a hat. When he was given a excellent hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and wagering with his hat. Needless to say, he by no means won.
The greatest poker gambler I ever saw was a guy who produced a lot more movements and gestures at a poker table than anyone I had ever met. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Usually an high priced suit and tie, boots shined and nails manicured. He was fastidious in this manner. And he was often brushing his pant leg or holding his hands or stacking his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to examine him for long periods of time. I would attempt to see if I could spot his tell. Selecting lint off his shirt- did this imply he was bluffing? Arranging his chips in a very short pile – did this imply he had a beneficial hand?
Many years later I ran into him in a very bar in Chi town and we had a beverage. I asked him if he have been aware of all those movements he made or if they have been unconscious. He informed me that just about every little thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everyone is constantly checking out everyone else’s poker face. They’re trying to detect the the tell.
So his system was to give them lots to believe about. His thinking was if they had been thinking about him choosing a piece of lint off his shirt and what it meant they sure weren’t pondering about their cards.
His method was distraction. And it worked for him. Never give up a method that works for you.
