Stu is considered by most to the finest NL Hold em Poker player ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in ‘53 and started wagering poker before reaching his teens.
The young gambler began betting gin and at the age of 10 had won his initial gin tournament, while on vacation with his mother and father. By the age of 14 the little poker genius had become a pro and dropped out of school.
In 1954 Stu entered the record books by winning 10 grand in a gin rummy tournament without losing a single hand, a record which still stands in New York today.
The fast speaking superstar has been likened, in poker terms, to athletic superstars like Joe Namath and Kobe Bryant. Stu Ungar had a genuine skill for betting poker but despite his successes in Hold em poker, he preferred wagering gin.
Stu once said that there may some day be a far better NL Hold em gambler than him but he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a greater gin gambler.
In 1980 Stu Ungar was put on the world map as one of the very best Texas hold em Poker players in the planet when he was crowned World Poker Champion for the first time. Amazingly it was the 1st time he had played in the tournament.
The subsequent year he put aside any suggestions that it had been a fluke, by successfully defending his crown. And in ‘97 Stu set the record by succeeding his 3rd World poker championship.
Except this poker legend also struggled with drug abuse and a year following winning his 3rd title Stu Ungar past away in his hotel room. According to medical doctors, he had passed away from cardiac arrest which was triggered by his lifestyle.
Stu had started with nothing except his ability and natural talent for the game which made this poker good a millionaire numerous times over.
