Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5.
