Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only one to achieve last poker table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might recall one of the largest pots in high stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a big pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the greatest enthusiasts anywhere in the world. While wagering on net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He regularly plays in the 200/400 NL maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus more often than not buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He waits patiently for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I accept that Gus is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is flat broke, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the min buy in.
Buying in for the min takes almost all of the skill out of big stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full dollar value. I think tv can alter our view of the real world sometimes. The greatest players anywhere in the world could be guys you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen wagering on internet poker on Full Tilt. He commonly participates in big stakes omaha/8 and hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he use his abilities in cash games?
