Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently wager against each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
