Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The real improvement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
