Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus attention even more on the game.
The definite advancement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly wager against one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
